Are you sitting comfortably?

It’s been a while. So take a seat… here?

This would be my ideal party. There are sixteen seats at this table… Who would you invite?!

Currently sitting in my living room having re-vitalised my poor student-food-ed body with healthy green food – avocados and couscous rather than Scarborough fish and chips (lovely though they are). Had a Courtney Cox-esque haircut today. Watching indulgent programmes like Railway Walks with Julia Bradbury and Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets. Slightly salivating, but nonetheless will try to update you on the past week…

We went to the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough… The weather was like this:

It was beautiful, which made living with nine other people in a four person flat and having 19 hour days a lot more bearable!

WUDSFive Kinds of Silence (which I was in) won the FestGoers award – which is voted for by the other students: we were all very very pleased and proud to win the award! The Stage and Dan Hutton (amongst other reviewers of the Noises Off magazine) reviewed the show very fairly, and doing three performances on one day didn’t seem to have too many detrimental effects!

WUDS’ other show, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui got some undeserved criticism from Janet Suzman at the awards’ ceremony, but still managed to pick up awards in lighting design and sound composition. All of the performances were reviewed by my reviewing friend (they are all linked from this key article), but here are my thoughts, briefly… Photographs are easier, because I think my drama critic brain has been fried by too much post-show discussion! And, of course, still recovering from some amazing but knackering workshops… Here we are!

What do you want from me? University of Salford… Beautiful, honest, dance theatre. Not long enough. Not quite this:

…but it was good enough.

Stop, Look, Listen was new writing by Elizabeth Gaubert (University of Reading). It was brilliantly executed, but I started to lose interest in the middle, as it truly was a play of two halves. It wasn’t this:

Jason and Medea, presented by the Bristol Old Vic Young Company was brilliantly entertaining… It wasn’t perfect but such good fun. Such a shame that in my head I kept comparing it with last year’s By the Bog of Cats. Brilliant music, though. But it wasn’t this:

I disliked both Bluebird (University of Nottingham) and Pornography (University of Cambridge), because they weren’t cohesive at all, although both had their merits. Guess which production had a real one of these onstage?

University of Nottingham’s This Wide Night was utterly fantastic and I am in complete awe of the acting abilities of the two-handed production (although the transitions weren’t quite there). But I came away having been in floods of tears. Bleak, but sort of hopeful ending… Like… this… (tenuous):

The University of Edinburgh’s Amadeus met with mixed reactions, but I loved it: it was light relief from the incest/rape themes of the week, and the performances were stellar. And there was music in it. Lots of it… They deserved all the awards they got. Have you seen the film?

And, rather fittingly for now, After the End was the last performance we saw, again from the University of Nottingham (the Nottingham Naturalists… or is it naturists?), and it was the most tense piece of theatre I’ve ever scene with the most interesting script. It was set in a bunker a little bit like this one. Sort of.

Well, I couldn’t find one.

I’m going to have my gin and tonic now. Serious blogging will commence one day soon. (She says).
